 How Freedom Feeder Started

Freedom Feeder was founded in 2007 by Melissa and Steve Auman, who are both professional natural barefoot trimmers and horse owners with nearly a century of combined horse knowledge. The idea came from their deep understanding of horses as grazing animals and their desire to help horses maintain natural feeding behaviors even when pasture wasn’t available.

The founders were inspired by the concept of “Pasture in a Net” — a slow feed system that mimics the grazing motion horses use on pasture. They wanted to provide a product that would slow horses down, encourage natural chewing, and reduce feed waste, while also supporting digestive health. This approach was part of a broader “slow feed movement” they pioneered, aiming to improve horse welfare and performance.

By 2008, the company was formally established, and their Freedom Feeder Small Mesh Hay Nets became a U.S.-made solution for slow feeding. The nets were designed to be durable, safe for horses’ teeth and gums, and to encourage the grazing-like behavior of searching, selecting, and plucking hay.

The product quickly gained traction, with early adopters including trainers like Matt Chew and Kristin Mulhall at Santa Anita Race Track, who reported reduced feed waste, lower colic risk, and fewer stomach ulcers in racehorses. Over time, Freedom Feeder expanded its reach through distributors like Kensington Protective Products, Inc., and became a trusted name in equine slow feed systems.

Today, Freedom Feeder continues to support its “Work With Me” warranty, offering lifetime guarantees and repair assistance, and remains committed to helping horses live happier, healthier lives through natural feeding solutions.
